Davide Bigoni graduated from the University of Bologna (Italy), where he completed his PhD in 1991 under the supervision of Professor T. Hueckel (Duke University, USA). He began his academic career at the University of Bologna and, since 2001, he has been a Full Professor at the University of Trento, where he leads a dynamic research group specializing in Solid and Structural Mechanics. His recognitions include election as a Euromech Fellow by the European Mechanics Society (2009), the Ceramic Technology Transfer Day Award (2012), and a Doctor Honoris Causa from Ovidius University of Constanța (2014). He has also received the Panetti and Ferrari Award for Applied Mechanics from the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino (2016) and the Eugenio Beltrami Senior Scientist Prize (2025). Professor Bigoni’s research has been featured on the covers of nine international journals. He has played a key role in fostering academia–industry collaboration, coordinating three European grants and a Marie Curie Fellowship, and is the recipient of two ERC Advanced Grants from the European Research Council (2013, 2021).

Professor Bigoni has supervised 30 PhD students to completion and is currently advising six PhD candidates. He has also mentored five postdoctoral researchers. Among his 35 alumni, 20 have secured permanent academic or research positions at leading institutions worldwide, including Harvard University (USA), SISSA (Italy), the University of Washington (USA), the University of Reggio Emilia (Italy), Cardiff University (UK), the University of Genoa (Italy), the University of Cagliari (Italy), the University of British Columbia (Canada), University College London (UK), Sandia National Laboratories (USA), Lund University (Sweden), Brunel University (UK), the University of Trento (Italy), the University of Trieste (Italy), NTUA (Greece), New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Zhejiang University (China).

His international contributions include serving as Guest Lecturer for the Midwest Mechanics Seminars (2018), election as a Non-Resident Fellow of the Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere (2019), and being featured in the 60th Anniversary Issue of the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids. He has delivered Plenary and General Lectures at major international conferences, including the 22nd International Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) and the 19th European Mechanics of Materials Conference. He is also a Member of the General Assembly of IUTAM. In 2024, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Italian Academy of Engineering.

His editorial service includes roles as Co-Editor of the Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures and Associate Editor of Mechanics Research Communications. He serves on the editorial boards of leading journals, including Acta Mechanica Sinica, Archives of Mechanics, International Journal of Applied Mechanics, International Journal of Solids and Structures, Journal of Elasticity, Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures.
